MSTRKRFT (feat. John Legend) - Heartbreaker

JFK (producer and MSTRKRFT member, pictured right) dicusses his thoughts on this song:

“i like them all for different reasons… but heartbreaker is my favorite. i made it in my living room at about 3 am not long before i got divorced. the wife had gone to bed… in her room cause we already had seperate rooms at that point… and i had stayed downstairs playing my wurlitzer kinda resting my head on top of it. literally my hands just played that part and i wrote the progression in about 5 minutes. i didnt want to forget it so i started up my computer and wrote it out in midi… then next thing i knew i had added drums and the bass… the droning pad and then wrote the lead. so after about an hour, the music was done. ironically its that stuff thats on the record.. we never re-recorded anything except the bass synth. then i remembered a song my friend nick had written the vocals for that him and i had intended to make together and forgotten about… probably like a year earlier… but i noticed the melody and the lyrics fit perfectly if i just transposed them to my key. i did a demo with a vocoder and then after we had done the john legend remix, he said he wanted to do more stuff with us. i sent him the demo and he said he wanted to sing it. couldnt have come together any better really. blows my mind when i listen to it cause it so accurately captures how i was feeling at the time. i was actually in my old house tonight and i was standing where the wurlitzer used to be and remembering it all. maybe im just typing it out now cause its fresh in my mind again.”
